Artist Profile
Sofie Bové is Copenhagen based artist. She is educated from the University of Copenhagen, where she took her Master of Art in Art History. In her work as an artist she has turned her interest in the academic study of the portrayal of women, and in particular witches, throughout art history and made it into her artistic practice.
To Bové the Witch is a dual figure. It represents both absolute freedom and ancient suppression. The witch caries the history of the witch trials and the inquisitors definition of the evil female nature, but through her work Bové is transforming this narrative into one of liberation. The witches in Bovés work are often both grotesque and beautiful at the same time and elusive when it comes to defining or understanding their nature. They deny the viewer a clear understanding of them under any moral definition and reference both the evil witch and the beauty of the nude. The two ways of portraying woman merge into something impossible and somehow more real than any of them.
